TACTICAL MIND GAME

The purpose of the document is to raise your awareness of positive and negative psychological tactics. In order to do this various examples are given. The use of negative psychology is regarded as gamesmanship (the use of dubious, although not technically illegal, methods to win a game) and is frowned upon. Be aware, but do not be tempted.

There is a LIGHT side and a DARK side to psychology.

Psychology can be used constructively (the light side) and destructively (the dark side). In order to master the Mind Game you must be able to recognise and deal with external destructive influences by utilising  constructive thinking.

Throughout life you will encounter people and situations that will have a positive or negative influence on you and your performance.

Ever watched the ‘X Factor’? People with absolutely no singing talent stand in front of a panel of judges (and millions of viewers) and murder a good song. They however believe they are talented undiscovered stars, and can’t believe it when told otherwise!

Somebody at some stage of their lives has implanted the idea that they can in fact sing – and they believe it. They have evolved in an environment where praise has been abundant and from this a positive belief has been formed. Apart from the possibility they might be tone deaf, this is how strong the psychology of self-belief and praise can be.

The opposite can happen if you live in an environment where you are constantly criticized. Unless you are unbelievably strong, you will eventually doubt your ability to make a good decision or carry out a function in fear of doing the wrong thing. Over time your self-esteem and confidence will crumble.

The same influences are at work with the company you keep in your world of sport.

You should avoid spending time with people who are constantly sarcastic, critical or generally negative. They are a severe threat to your positive mind. If you are unlucky enough to have to play somebody with a negative disposition avoid participating in conversation with them, they will soon draw you down to their level. Keep chat to a minimum and always remain positive when you speak.

Use the sections Dark Side to raise your awareness and strengthen your defences, and Light Side to develop your game planning.
