The
Dark Side
Gamesmanship
Be on
your guard. There are individuals who will employ any tactic they can in
order to win – sad individuals who have either lost touch with the
essence and reality of sport, or have some need to compensate for
inadequacy or
feelings
of inferiority by winning at all cost.
Whatever
the reason, it is to the detriment of the sport that people like this
exist, but exist they do, so you must learn to cope with their devious
tactics.
It must
also be said, there are others who may simply put you off. They have no
motive, just a talent for achieving this.
Do not
get paranoid though, many events will be pure accidents. But learning to
spot and deal with a bit of gamesmanship will make you a more robust
competitor.
Warning:
Gamesmanship is frowned upon. It will earn you a poor reputation. What’s
more, if you are detected trying underhanded tactics you might motivate
your opponent. Do not be tempted towards the Dark Side.
If you
are the victim of gamesmanship it is most important not to let it upset
you. If it does, your opponent has achieved
their
objective. Just learn to recognise it, stay cool, restate your goals and
use your centering and relaxation techniques. The fact you have spotted
a bit of legal cheating will give you an advantage and the
opportunity to turn the tables on the 'low life'. For gamesmanship to
work it requires a reaction, so the best way to engage with the gamesman
is not to bite.
It is not
possible to give examples of every Dark tactic that may be used, but
check through this section for a few tips.
