Happy place
- Put a stop to negative thinking
Think of a happy
place
There will be
something, someone or somewhere that is particularly special to you. A
person, event or place that makes you feel warm, comfortable and
relaxed – a thought that puts life into perspective (a
feel good factor).
This exercise is particularly helpful if, having tried everything
else, you still find yourself stressed.
The image of a happy
place will soothe away anxiety and promote the belief that no matter
what setbacks are encountered during the day there is always something
special to be cheerful about.
As you center on
this image, the warmth and power of these thoughts will far outweigh
and block any negativity you may be feeling. (also see
Centering
and
Visualisation)
The subject will of
course differ between each of us, but the result will be the same.
Fill your head with thoughts from your happy place and see how your
attitude changes in an instant.
Smiling
Nobody is suggesting
you should walk around grinning like the village idiot, but smiling is
an excellent way to eradicate negative thinking.
Force the smile if
necessary and hold it, if only for a few seconds. This ridiculously
simple action (and the fact that you are doing it consciously) will
distract your thoughts and block negativity with an action associated
with happiness.
Example:
Take the ’new’ Phil Mickelson. Watch the expression on his face whilst
walking between shots – an almost fixed grin. Quite a change to the
previously bad tempered player. And the results…. well they simply
speak for themselves.
So next time you
play a poor shot or miss that putt, look away and smile. The fact is
the shot is played – you can’t change that. No amount of ‘toy
throwing’ or kicking your clubs will change that. The moments spent
smiling might be all the time you need to recover your composure and
relax back into your performance.
