| Concern
over drugs testing in Junior Golf |
|
If you read
the EGU Conditions and Rules governing
Championships and Tournaments you will
notice that a competitor may be asked to
take a drugs test. This has sparked concern
with organisers and parents with regard to
Junior Golf and Child Protection
legislation.
(EGU General Conditions - Para 9)
Whilst it is
high on everybody's list of priorities to
cleanse sport of illegal substances, who is
going to ensure the protection of minors
during the testing process? If parents are
present one might argue there to be little
issue, but what happens if a suspected
junior has hitched a lift with a friend, as
is so often the case? Discussions are
presently underway. Watch this space. |
McEvoy backs new
version of Golf
| Ever heard
of Power Play? It's a new version of Golf
that it is hoped will have the same impact
on the sport as Twenty Twenty Cricket and
Rugby Sevens. |
| Played
over 9 holes, each green has two pins -
black denoting 'difficult' and white for the
easier position. Points will be awarded for
the difficulty of the challenge taken on. |
| Other
ideas to spice up this innovation are to
include a 30ft diameter circle around the
last black flag where players can win or
loose bonus points for accuracy. |
|

|
Peter McEvoy - Former British Amateur Champ and
Walker Cup Captain |
| A
pilot event will be held later this year at
Northwick Park involving clubs from the County of
Middlesex. It is hoped the new version of the game
will prove attractive with people who find it
difficult to devote enough time to watching and
playing. |

| Rules setback
for Matt Blackey |
 |
|
It looks as though
rules are going to place a major obstacle in the way
of Matt Blackey's plan to re-join the county scene
in Hampshire.
It seems almost
unbelievable, but Matt is no longer PGA qualified
since he left the European Tour to play on the
County circuit. The current Hampshire Champion
appears to be taking this rather bizarre news
philosophically and has thoughts to develop a
possible career in coaching.
This setback to Matt
could be the making of other budding talent should
the 35 year old from Southampton choose
coaching as the way forward. |

Wade stunned as he looses Faldo qualifier on
countback |
|
Tom Wade is still in
shock having lost the regional qualifier for the
Faldo Series on a countback.
Played at the
acclaimed Championship Course - The Oxfordshire
- on Monday 19th March, Tom not only took on a
talented field but had to cope with bitterly cold
weather conditions.
The Oxfordshire is
unusual in that it might be described as an 'inland
links'. There is plenty of water, very few trees and
precious little shelter from the wind - which seems
to blow most of the time across the exposed
landscape.
Returning a gross
score of 77, the Waterlooville Junior Captain and
Hampshire County U18 player was shocked to find out that
not only was a play-off out of the question but he
was out of the competition.

What a year for
Liphook's Sam Hutsby
England Boys Captain! Spanish
Amateur Champion! Runner-up in the McEvoy! Now a member of
the England 'A' Squad, the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and
Channel Islands Junior Champion of 2004 has certainly made
his presence felt on the International golf scene.
Although only 18 years old,
Sam has undoubtedly set the standard for former colleagues
at Hampshire's Golfing School of Excellence. |
|
In his short international
career Sam has already travelled the globe, playing in the
2006 World Junior Team Championship in Japan and the
European Boys Team Championship in Sweden. Now being
compared to Hampshire's Justin Rose, Sam certainly looks
like he has all the credentials to make his mark on the
Professional circuit - it's just a matter of when! |

From Men's Club Champion to
England U18 Champion!
Unbelievable as it might
sound, the biggest competition Rowlands Castle's Darren
Wright had won before he became the England U18 Champion was
the Club Championship - or so he claims!
Returning a course record 64
which included 8 birdies, Darren was crowned 2006 England
U18 Champion at Nottingham's Sherwood Forest Golf Club in
July.
Now a member of the England
U21 squad, Darren was honoured by Hampshire at the recent
AGM, when the County presented him with the coveted Varden
Trophy - for achievement and ambassadorial services to the
game. Well done Darren! |

Has Matt Blackey quit The Tour for
good?
It seems Matt Blackey, the top
Hayling professional and Hampshire Open Champion, has
decided to give the Challenge Tour a miss for the time
being. Matt has also decided not to go for his European Tour
card by attending the Tour School for the eighth time.
Most of us relish the thought
of touring around playing golf, but for Matt this has lost
it's appeal.
If Matt misses The Tour he
will return with guns blazing, but until then..... |

Waterlooville Juniors win the
Southdowns League again
The 2006 Southdowns League
belongs to Waterlooville Juniors yet again. Team Manager
Paul Woodgate is delighted for the boys. At the end of a
hectic season which has brought much success for individuals
of the team, it's wonderful to see them pool their talents
and play for each other. Guess what, they're already
planning 2007 - so watch out! |

Wonder Wader shows what he's
made of
Waterlooville
golfer Tom Wade cleaned up at Petersfield GC, by winning
the prestigious Wishart Trophy. The competition, only open to golfers
with a handicap under 10, was won in the face of stiff opposition.
After a dreadful start in the
afternoon (including a 9 on the par 5 2nd) Tom discovered
that sports psychology really does work and came in ahead of
a very impressive field.
